PELARGONIUM NOTES
Annual herbs or perrenial sub-shrubs with woody or herbaceous stems, rarely tuberous. Leaves palmately divided or trifoliolate, flowers with 4-5 petals, with posterior two much bigger or the same size as the anterior, or with the anterior petals absent. Fertile stamens 2, 3, 5 or 7. Hypanthium shorter or longer than pedicel. Basic chromosome number, x = 9. Further characters, on which the species are separated into a section are pollen morphology, RbcL gene sequences, and phenolic composition. See S. Afr. J. Bot. 63 (1997) 4-21 for details.
