PELARGONIUM NOTES
Perennials, erect to decumbent or procumbent subshrubs, with branched or much branched, subsucculent stems, usually woody at base, geophytic (one species), often with persistent stipules or petioles. Leaves simple, usually pinnately divided. Petioles usually shorter than laminae. Pedicel short, much shorter than hypanthium. Petals 5, subequal, posterior two slightly bigger. Fertile stamens (4-5) 7. Basic chromosome number, x = 11. Further characters, on which the species are separated into a section are pollen morphology, cpDNA trnL-F sequences, and phenolic composition. See S. Afr. J. Bot. 66 (2000) 31-43 for details.
